I've been thinking about the role tha the subject of English should
play in a content-language integrated curriculum. Should the English
lesson follow the curriculum as it is now design, or should the English
lesson be a complement to the NL subjects, supporting them with
specific vocabulary or grammar and functions needed. I want to hear
what you think about.

BILIGUALISM: Are we talking about FL or L2?
I want to introduce this topic for discussion which I've been thinking
on lately. A bilingual person can use his/her mother tongue (L1) and
another language which for several reasons is quiet used (L2) in his/
her environment. If we refer to English, German or French in Spain,
these languages could never be considered L2. These languages must be
considered FLs. Can you talk about bilingualism considering a L1 & a
FL? When does a FL become a L2?. Most of us are teachers who have an
acceptable command of English or French but, is English our L2 or
FL?. I'll talk now about me. My L1 is Spanish but if we refere to some
topics, for example, linguistics or information technology I feel
more comfortable using English than Spanish. So in that case, is
English my L2 ro my FL?.
On the other hand if we are talking about an specific field: medicine,
engeneering, .... I won't feel confortable either in Spanish or
English, so here we are talking of English for Specific Purposes. Has
ESP got anyting to do with CLIL?
On the other hand, If we pretend our students to be bilingual, will the
new language they are learning be a FL or L2?

En la actualidad, las autoridades educativas están intentando lanzar
el "programa bilingüe" en la educación. Programa bilingüe en
conjunción con otras lenguas Europeas: Inglés, Francés, Aleman, ...
¿Qué concepto de bilingüismo tiene las autoridades educativas? Creo
que no se puede hablar de enseñanza bilingüe cuando ni los mismos
docentes que tienen que impartir las clases en LE son bilingües.
Quizás sea más coherente hablar de AICLE ya que lo que se va a
intentar en realidad es impartir contenidos en LE, con todas las
limitaciones y obstáculos con los que nos encontraremos. ¿Tienen la
mayoría de los docentes en España un nivel adecuado de competencias
lingüísticas como para impartir clases en LE. ¿Será el "input" que se
les proporciona a nuestros alumnos el adecuado? Yo creo que tendríamos
que poner los pies sobre el suelo y dejarnos de fantasías. ¿Cuáles son
los objetivos reales a los que podemos aspirar en un principio? En mi
modesta opinión yo creo que en un principio sólo se podría intentar
que los alumnos conozcan algo del vocabulario especializado sobre el
tema que se esté tratando, interpretar algunos textos, esquemas,
diagramas, tablas, ....
